This week stumbled upon Google Notebook Lm which is an AI tool that will make a podcast out of your book or notes on any topic. So, I uploaded my book and it created a very convincingly real podcast which you can listen to below:

In the fictional discussion between the two AI personalities, they discuss many things about my book. I was quite impressed by it, they focused upon two metaphors that I used to describe your metabolism, one is about riding a horse and the other surfing a wave.

It is essential to understand the difference between your behaviours, your body and the YOU who is reading this. This is because your body and your behaviours act automatically and have many actions going on that are not under your control. It is like they have a mind of their own.

When you confuse yourself for your body or your behaviours it sets you up for disappointment and frustration. You will blame yourself for mistakes and be angry about your struggles to get results. This is unnecessary because it assumes you are calmly in control of all of your actions.

Riding A Horse – A good analogy of this process is to think about riding a horse. The horse represents your body and behaviours while you are the jockey. However good you are at riding, you are never totally in charge of the process, the horse still has a mind of its own. For many people when they try to change shape it is like they are on a very unruly horse for the first time ever. It can take time to learn how to ride and direct the animal but with practice anyone can become skilled at it.

Examples of this interplay include when you binge eat because of low blood sugar (body), if you eat badly only when around friends (behaviour) or when you cut out junk food and resist cravings at the start of a new regime (You).

Surfing A Wave – Linked closely to this is viewing your metabolism as a wave, which we have talked about previously, and that you are the surfer trying to get to shore.

Viewing it as an ocean wave shows that your metabolism is not fixed nor constant but it is changing and unpredictable. The greater your calorie deficit or the larger amount of body fat lost the bigger the wave becomes. This means your hunger increases, your motivation weakens and your energy levels become much more variable. You may find the wave gets so big it crushes you and knocks you off the board. This could mean you binge for a few days, quit your exercise programme or maybe you get sick with a cold.

At this point you may become demotivated and question why you cannot stick to the plan, you feel down, guilty and angry.  But does a surfer really feel guilty for a wave knocking them off the board? Why not blame the wave?

It is wrong to think that you are just in charge of your metabolism. Surfers fall off waves all the time, just gather yourself and jump back on the next wave when you are ready.

At the end of the 15 minute ‘podcast’ the AI went a bit mad and started talking about things I didn’t actually put in my book as they went on about epigenetics a lot. Anyhow, you can’t win them all.

What Does This Means For You?

When it comes to behaviour change most people think it is like driving their car or getting the train. You decide on the destination and off you go. If only it was that easy. It is unhelpful to view yourself as complete master of your own behaviours on a short term scale. Longer term, yes, you can create any good habit or new behaviour but that comes from addressing your current habits, beliefs and subconscious patterns. This takes more input and duration.

The same applies to your results, you can completely transform your health, fitness or body shape. However, you can’t just switch off the body during this process and think it will not give signals back. It will influence your thoughts and feelings. We are integrated, the mind-body is a whole, so they come together, one influences the other and vice versa.

This means you cannot just decide to eat nothing for a month or two without some aggressive feedback from your body (a huge wave). When you account for this though you can plan ahead and realistically work out a road map for success. You will probably then find getting results is much easier than you would have thought.
