I read section one from my book over the weekend and wanted to share a short extract that always seems to hit home with clients. It’s about understanding who’s really running the show when it comes to your health, fitness and habits.

It is essential to understand the difference between your behaviours, your body and the you who is reading this. Your body and your behaviours act automatically and have many actions going on that are not under your control. It’s like they have a mind of their own.

When you confuse yourself for your body or behaviours it sets you up for disappointment and frustration. You blame yourself for mistakes, get angry about your struggles to get results and start to lose belief. This is unnecessary because it assumes you’re calmly in control of everything you do. In reality, your body and your behaviours often lead the way, and sometimes you follow. 

Examples of this interplay include when you binge eat because of low blood sugar (body), when you eat badly only when around friends (behaviour), or when you cut out junk food and resist cravings at the start of a new regime (you).

A good analogy is riding a horse. The horse represents your body and behaviours, while you are the jockey. However good a rider you are, you’re never totally in charge, the horse still has a mind of its own. For many people trying to change shape, it’s like being on a wild horse for the first time. It takes time to learn how to guide it, stay on, and eventually move together as one. But with practice, anyone can become skilled at it.

When you understand this dynamic, you stop fighting yourself. You begin to see setbacks as part of the process, not proof of failure. The goal is to learn how to work with your body and behaviours, not against them. This is why I get annoyed by how many people believe it is almost impossible to get fit & healthy these days. They assume there is something wrong with them as a person (You). The reality is that you have simply never used the techniques to modify both your body & your behaviours.

You can train your body to have more energy, to be more stable around hunger & to have less cravings. You can also establish any behaviour pattern you want over time, but this process does not involve you just grinding through some awful plan using every bit of willpower you have left.  

What This Means For You

Take a minute to consider how these parts have affected your actions:

-When has your body taken over and led your actions?

-When have automatic habits or behaviours steered you without thinking?

-When have you consciously stepped in and overridden what your body or habits wanted to do?
