At the moment, Hyrox is the most popular thing in fitness in the UK. This is because it is a nice combination of running and strength training yet done without the complexity and difficulty of lifting such as in Cross Fit. The organisers have also nicely managed to market it as a participation event so it feels accessible to most people unlike many other sports. The event itself is also quite an atmosphere with music blasting, all sorts of people competing with their friends in good support. This has led to the big UK growth.
As far as actual fitness goes, it is good as it requires any aerobic addict to add strength training to their routine yet not in a way that feels like traditional resistance work. For people who are good at strength work already then it forces them to adopt some aerobic methods which is very good for overall health.
The most powerful element of Hyrox is the fact it is a fitness challenge. I discuss this in my book, how motivation is not just what you can convince yourself to feel or do, but it is hugely influenced by the environment around you. A powerful way to begin to shape this in your favour is to focus on some sort of fitness pursuit.
It will boost your exercise consistency from the moment you sign up and give you added motivation up until the event itself. There is also the post event high which can give you additional motivation for months afterwards.
I encourage almost everyone to do some of sort event, ideally every year, as it raises the bar around your behaviours. There are so many options this day and age with varying levels of commitment needed.
The ideal fitness challenge excites you to want to do it yet should also scare you a little bit so that this fear forces you into training more consistently. I wouldn’t overly analyse why you want to do something, if it appeals then go for it! For some reason Rugby, 400m, bodybuilding and now Hyrox made me want to do them. Who knows why football, marathons, triathlons or martial arts never caught my attention in the same way.
The idea with these challenges is that you will focus on your fitness for many weeks to months in preparation. Hyrox has really driven my own fitness focus over the last year. I started my Friday night free Hyrox fitness class as a result of it and have really got my running back on track after years of not doing any while I focused on bodybuilding. Your first challenge does not need to be anything major but whatever you choose, sign up for it now & put it in the diary.
