I’m in Barcelona and have just finished a Hyrox race, a good end to this current training block. A personal best but not a great performance.
Last year I went to Sweden for another Hyrox and visited the Vasa Museum, home to a huge old warship that sank almost immediately after setting sail in the 1600s. There is an old philosophical question linked to ships that also applies to health & fitness:
If every plank of wood, every sail and every nail is eventually replaced, is it still the same boat?
I often hear people say “Well, I’m 50 now, what do you expect?” or “My body just isn’t what it used to be.” but your body is constantly rebuilding itself.
Your stomach lining regenerates in around a week. Your skin replaces itself roughly every month. Even your skeleton is in a constant state of turnover. Most of the cells in your body today were not there a few years ago.
What if in two years every new cell was reproduced with higher quality than today? Are you two years older or biologically younger?.
This is what biological age scores try to imply but they are quite clunky and are more using mortality predictions like body fat over actually looking at cells. I created a quick life expectancy & wellbeing test for you last year, which you can find here>>.
Exercise and health acts as the catalyst for accelerating change and influences the quality of the new cells
Still, the principle underneath it is important. The future version of you is not fixed. What you repeatedly do today influences the quality of the person you become over the nextfew years.
This is also why I think people massively underestimate how much they can change.
You do not need to become a fitness fanatic overnight. You do not need the perfect plan. You do not need to suddenly turn into an ultra-disciplined person.
You just need to start improving the rebuilding process a little bit.
More movement.
Better sleep.
Slightly better eating.
Less stress.
More consistency.
Then let time do the work.
What Does This Mean For You
Most people think of ageing as decline, I see it as an opportunity to grow. Almost everyone I work with, whether they are 30, 40 or 50 years old, has the opportunity to become the fittest, strongest and healthiest they have ever been. Unless you were an Olympic athlete in your 20s, there is a very good chance you can still achieve lifetime bests now.
And even later in life, the difference between people can become enormous. One 60 year old can struggle to get up the stairs, while another is doing Hyrox races, hiking mountains or feeling stronger than they did at 40. I have seen clients in their 70s and 80s massively improve their health, movement, confidence and fitness.
The idea that everything inevitably falls apart with age simply is not true. Your future is still being shaped by what you repeatedly do today.
