My approach to helping clients is based on long term success, I am focused on creating new natural habits that will sustain your results with very little mental effort on your part. I feel what many people miss, is that to create this approach you will often need to use intense, overreaching blocks of focused attention.
Last weekend I was in Albania, it was a great weekend away. As well as enjoying some tourism, it turned into a nice intense training block. I have been stumbling along for the last couple of months since injuring my knee (I did it slipping on the wet burpees carpet doing Hyrox in Warsaw). This meant I have run once a week at most while managing my knee injury. While away, I went hard with my runs, getting 5 runs done in 6 days, the most weekly volume this year, plus an hour stretching a day which cleared up the knee pain.
This sort of training block helps on two fronts, one it gets short term results in the real world, your body will respond quickly to the stimulus, but in a behavioural sense it really sets the tone for future weeks and building habits. The intense week got rid of my knee injury, provided some powerful reps in acclimatising to heat and moved my genuine fitness along a tiny bit. Now I am a back in London this will allow me to carry on these gains.
This approach applies across all of health & fitness. There is power if you go all in for a short period of time. This could mean you cut out alcohol for a week, you stretch 45 minutes a day to clear up an injury, you lift weights every day for muscle growth. Perhaps you decide to eliminate gluten and dairy for 5 days to see how it affects your health, or you commit to 8 hours sleep a night for 3 days over a weekend to recharge your energy levels.
What Does This Mean For You?
I feel people separate into either a slow steady approach, or an all guns blazing extreme. Sticking to only one approach undermines longer term results. Decide on an area of health & fitness and see if anything appeals in regards to doing a short, sharp burst of focus. You do not need to commit long term to the behaviour, but it is worth doing as it will reshape your behaviour patterns as well as getting short term results.
There are so many options you can use to go hard for a short period of time. It could be a week of very low calories to help body composition change, or perhaps you just eat loads of vegetables every day to get you back into healthy eating. You could see a trainer a few times in a week or buy a daily pass to a local exercise class. Some people focus on getting in loads of protein to reset intake thresholds. Whether it is sleep, food, exercise or injury rehab there is a good chance doing an intense week (it can be shorter or longer than this) will produce short term results with longer term behaviours changes.
What can you commit to?
