What were your goals?
When I was at school, I was extremely sporty. Even in college I played regular basketball and tennis and worked out frequently at the gym. My family is quite sporty, so it was never a question of motivation or opportunity. However, as I got older, working full time meant I became very sedentary, spending a lot of time sitting on laptops. As is common with a lot of people in the corporate world, sport and exercise moved down my list of priorities, with supporting my family and advancing my career becoming my priorities. As a result, I felt I had become quite unfit and put on a lot of weight. I wanted to do something about it but had been struggling with motivation and did not seem able to keep to a diet or maintain regular gym attendance. That’s when I found Ben.
Why did you choose to work with Ben?
I had tried Personal Trainers before, and followed coaching advice online, but it never really worked. I always felt that the routines and regimens were too restrictive and all I ended up feeling was guilty that I wasn’t following them to the letter. Ben’s approach was a lot more forgiving. He incorporated a lot of psychology and his methods seemed to consider me as an individual – especially my habits. He looked closely at my lifestyle and even before we hit the gym I felt that he had laid out a clear path that I could manage both emotionally and mentally. This holistic approach was very encouraging and felt like a breath of fresh air!
How was the experience and what results did you get?
Everything felt like a new experience. Instead of trying to go 0 to 100 overnight, which is what a lot of the methods I’d tried before demanded, and bailing out after 2 weeks, Ben’s approach felt much more like one step at a time. Very quickly I was seeing improvements. It really surprised me how easily, after a while, going to the gym felt less like a chore. Likewise eating – it didn’t feel like a struggle, and I didn’t feel guilty all the time. I was also sleeping better. Usually, when I’m experiencing a lot of stress, I find it extremely hard to stick to a diet or training regimen. Not this time – Ben introduced me to something he calls ‘emotional freedom technique’ which really helped. Before I knew it, I was exercising more regularly than I’d ever done in years and was feeling fit and full of energy. But most importantly, for the first time in years, I not only reached a weight I was happy with, but I had more energy and felt more emotionally balanced than ever before. It felt sustainable. Since then, I’ve been able to maintain my weight and my fitness in a range I’m much happier with. Ben really did change my life – and my lifestyle – for the better, and I can’t recommend him enough for people who keep failing to reach their fitness and health goals.
