Previously I have discussed gym exercise classes while today we look at exercising in a gym per se.

The Positives about Gym Exercise –

  • Accessibility -The gym makes it very easy to get all your fitness needs done in one place. This can be even better if fitted into the fabric of your day like at lunch times or similar.
  • Sociable – While many find gyms a cold place most regular users find it quite sociable. This can be from training with friends or chatting to people who you see regularly. This can be lost if you only train at peak hour when it is a bit manic.
  • Fitness Development – The ability to increase fitness is almost second to none, when it comes to muscular development then it is hard to beat as you have to do resistance training in some form to grow muscle and the gym is the best environment to do it.
  • Motivation – Training around people who are in good shape and also working hard motivates yourself to do it more.

The negatives about Gym Exercise –

  • Logistics – For many people who do not work or live right by a gym then simply getting to it can be a huge battle with the effort to get there and get changed etc. Likewise opening times can be restrictive for many people.
  • Environment – While many love the place most people do not. They find other people intimidating and feel self conscious. If you do not enjoy going then it is very hard to be consistent in your attendance.
  • Training Alone – Most people do not know what they are doing in the gym so it is of not surprise that they end up achieving little in regards to their goals. This also contributes to not liking the environment.

Summary

I think the gym has been too polarising putting many people off exercise by thinking that is the only way to move the body yet underused by most in how easy it is to learn what to do to get results from it. As ever with exercise it can be part of the mix rather than the be all and end all. If your goal is building muscle then it is by far and away the easiest and most effective way to get results. Though there are other ways to and forms of the gym now available from crossfit to bar workouts.
