Trying to get in shape for most people is a series of failures followed by an eventual quitting of your efforts. This pattern then repeats itself later on in the year as you once again embark on another attempt to achieve your goals.
To change this you would be wise to learn a little from the world of boxing. I am not talking the crash diets and sweat suits to make weight. That is beyond ridiculous for any non-weight sport based person.
The world of boxing can teach you a thing or two in the way it stages the challenges the fighters must face. Aspiring and talented boxers have their careers carefully scripted so that they never really have to face an opponent capable of beating them until they are both ready and done in a way that if they do lose it will be on a big pay day. The boxers have challenges of course on this path and still must perform. However, it makes life much easier when you know you are able to match an opponent.
If we switch back to weight loss. Do you script a path to ensure you achieve victories and build your confidence? Most people do not, most people start by taking on the biggest and baddest obstacles in their path. They already are going for the world championship. However, just like a new boxer fighting an experienced champion. The odds are not in your favour.
Here is an example of the step wise progression of behaviours.
Whether you need to do the above behaviours and how it fits with the principle of balance in long term success is not so important. Whatever behaviour or goal you want/need to do there will be a series of steps from the manageable and small to the difficult and hard.
It would be wise for you to conquer each level. Do not be too hasty to jump to the higher levels. Confidence is built form small successes joining together. You will also invariably find that success comes without ever having to win that world championship. E.g. you can eat that cake on your birthday, drink at the big party or wait 12 hours to do that run outside. It is nice to have the confidence though to know you could do these things.
