For many people their biggest enemy is their very own thoughts. All too often we are consciously or subconsciously aiming for perfection with our diets. We want it to be all vegetables, low calorie, low carb, low fat and low taste. We then wonder why we struggle to follow it and end up in a cycle of binging then trying to eat perfectly with the inevitable failure and resulting binge just around the next corner.

I like to look at the big picture. As pretty much no one is perfect with their diet despite their best intentions it makes more sense to look at the overall food intake consumed and account for everything you are eating whether you want to do it or not. When you do this you will often see quite how easy it is to improve your diet a little bit. For most people they only need to tighten their diet up a little bit while moving more and results begin to happen.

One way to do this is to start changing your focus from trying to be perfect and instead tell yourself  “I will have it later”. The reality with almost any food you are trying to give up is you will have it at some point in the future. Be this a few hours after you started your elimination or a few weeks. The important element is not how long you go without having it but accepting you will have it again at some point. This one thought stops the overeating and panic consumption people go through simply in repost to the thought of never eating or drinking that food again.

For some people who do change and do not go back to eating certain foods it is because their desire changes. They no longer want it. I have not drunk since 2007, it has not been 7 years of resisting cravings. It is the only logical thought in my mind, my desire to drink is zero. The thought seems stupid to me. Yet this does not happen overnight, if you drop into this state there is nothing to worry about. The thought in your head though that you are arguing against is not this one. It is the worry thought of living without your favourite food that drives binge cycle. The remedy is ‘I will have it later’ and understanding balance in your health and fitness behaviours.
