Change Your Thinking - Change Your Shape -

Daily Motivation Tips - Filling that hole…………

It is all very well telling someone to give up eating a possible food that could be preventing results, e.g. gluten, dairy, drinking etc but then what? Most people are left with a big void, a hole in their life. This is because almost everyone uses food / drink for emotional reasons, it does not make you a bad person. It simply makes you a person.

How do you know if you have an emotional connection to a food / drink? One of the signs is the mere fact you struggle when you try to give it up. A second sign is that you will grab for it at times when you are stressed or low.  Saying you do it just because you like it is also a sure sign it has an emotional attachment (e.g. supplying happiness).

One of the biggest mistakes people make is not accepting the fact they want that food for a reason. Instead they simply blame themselves for being a bad person or weak willed. Alternatively they deny there is a problem by saying one piece cannot do any harm (before eating 10 pieces).

Understand that every single behaviour you do is for a reason. None of your behaviours are good or bad it is simply that some of your behaviours will help you get into shape, others will be a disaster for your body.

Understand that all the behaviours you do are the best strategies you have come up with to handle the current circumstances using your current levels of knowledge. Some of these behaviours will help your body get in shape, while others will not. HOwever, they all serve a purpose and address a need (biochemical or emotional based need).

If you understand properly, you will begin to see you are not a bad person for your behaviours, you are simply a person. Your goal is not to beat yourself up for what you do but just to accept you are doing your best and then find more productive way to fulfil that same purpose.

Breaking addictions and getting into shape is an amazing journey. To get there you have to become in touch with what you truly enjoy instead of the false pleasure eating brings most people.

To help you along the way it is important to develop alternative behaviours to use. Think of this as your playbook of possible behaviours that you can do. It is one of the most important aspects of behaviour change. This is because if you are eating chocolate to make you happy then cutting chocolate out will still leave the desire of doing something to make you happy. Until you fill this need you will always be struggling and battling.

Most people find creating alternative strategies a little difficult to compile. This is because we all become out of touch with what we truly enjoy doing from the hectic stress life puts on us. We forget what we like doing!

Mind body change exercise

  • Accept than any negative behaviours you do currently are to fulfil a purpose emotionally.
  • Create alternative behaviours to use at the times most likely you will do a negative behaviour
  • Write down five non food or drink behaviours you can do that reminds you of when you were young.
  • Write down five tasks you enjoy doing for no other reason than because they are fun.
  • Write down five thoughts you can think about which make you happy.
  • Write down five non food or drink related activities that you find relaxes you.
  • Write down the five songs that make you feel great
  • Introduce these 25 happy actions into your daily routines. This will increase your overall happiness level. At times when you want to eat your troublefoods look to try one or two of these actions.
